5 Must Haves for an Awesome Nursery Design

Nurseries are definitely my favorite spaces to design. There are so many directions you can go, and no matter which you choose the destination is always special. Nurseries are simple spaces with basic needs. A crib, changing table, and rocker/glider are the bare necessities. Of course, you can definitely give your new bundle loads of love with the basics, but I want to show you how you can make your baby's nursery awesome

For a space that you'll enjoy just as much as your growing baby you'll need these 5 things:

<< 1 >> Unique and Fun Accessories

Make your baby's room stand out by sourcing unique finds to decorate with. Visit thrift shops, antique stores, art fairs, estate sales, and garage sales for special finds that you'd never find in a big box store. DIY-ing is also a great way to personalize the space.

<< 2 >> Furniture that does Double Doodie (hehehe)

Just because you're slinging diapers around on it doesn't mean it can't be stylish. Serving as extra storage is a special bonus. Those tiny humans need a crazy amount of stuff. And you need somewhere to store it. I love re-purposing dressers and with a couple of easy add-ons, they are perfect for changing tables.

<< 3 >> A Soft Spot for Tummy Time

Any parent, parent-to-be, former nanny *raises hand*, etc. knows that tummy time is super important in baby developing strength in his neck and upper body muscles. So, bring in a great rug for this special bonding and development time. Rugs are also a great way to incorporate patterns and colors into the space.

*Tip* Even if your nursery is carpeted, a rug can still pull your design concept together. Don't be afraid to layer up on the plushness.

<< 4 >> A Cool General Concept

A concept doesn't have to be so literal like a "Clown theme". (BTW- I kinda hate the word "theme". I'll use it because most people do, but I'll most definitely be thinking of a "concept" ;-) You can broaden it into a concept that gives you that general feeling and a much cooler design.

<< 5 >> An Awesome Color Concept

Paint and wallpaper can really transform a space. Choosing a great color direction can sometimes be difficult, but nailing it down is well worth the effort.

*Tip* Take your color options into different lights. Especially the light of the actual space. Different light sources can totally change how a color is perceived.

*Tip* Don't be afraid to mix it up a bit. You don't have to "match" everything. The most interesting spaces are usually ones that aren't too rigid with their color/pattern concept. Throw in a few tints, tones, and shades of your main color concept and watch how it elevates your design.

Putting together your little one's space should be fun and exciting. Use these tips to help create the nursery of your dreams. If you hit a creative block, check out pinterest, houzz, or ask for help! You're building a human inside your body, take a load off and let someone else do the work! ;-)
